Our fragile sense of self needs support, and this we get by having and possessing things because, to a large degree, we are what we have and possess. — Yi-Fu Tuan
An outcome as part of my project about our powerful connection to our clutter. Clutter for Comfort is a blanket for warmth, security, and safety.
Inspired by the minimalist lifestyle, this wearable piece explores the significance of decluttering one’s life down to its bare essentials. What sparks your joy? What items do you value most, the ones you’d save in a fire? Some might cite practical or essential items, but everyone holds a deep sentimental attachment to some of their stuff — this particular relationship impacts their response to these questions.
Contents of clutter were collected through these conversations, not to discard, but rather to store in an organised comfort blanket. Contrasting maximalism with minimalism, this cluttered blanket at first sight, presents a striking visual display of disposable objects. Yet, when compiled onto the single garment, these items assemble the puzzle pieces of an identity. The pocketed individual items allow viewers to perceive the sense of self and personhood. Clutter for Comfort not only redefines the modern minimalist, but also serves as a blanket for our fears, anxieties, and insecurities within ourselves. This blanket is a great graphic manifestation of our emotional baggage and how we carry and connect it to our material possessions.
